Meet Kelsie!

Have you ever had a conversation with someone and you knew instantly that you were designed to be in each others lives? That’s how I felt the first time I met Kelsie, she was lovely, giggly, and so sweet. We were instant friends on a hot afternoon by the river in Washington State. Without social media at that time, we didn’t stay in contact until almost 4 years later, when a friend from the gym invited her friend to join us for coffee. Turns  out, that Kelsie and I connected all over again, during that coffee date and we were destined to be friends. We shared the same values, morals, and passion for health and fitness.

Kelsie was in fact the first person to not only see my vision for a healthy community, but couldn’t wait to become apart of the movement. Much of where I am today, and this blog is accredited to the belief that Kelsie had in me, and the passion she had for a healthy lifestyle herself. I am so excited for you all to get to know Kelsie as well in our interview today!

Happy Autmun & A Not-So-Happy PSL

I am not a fan of cold weather in the least bit. I am however, I am giant fan of leggings, boots, sweaters, soup, and magical pumpkin everything! ❤ ❤ ❤ I squeal with excitement every time my Washington-born coffee shop releases their autumn menu. With learning more about nutrition and ingredients, I was interested in what actually goes into a Pumpkin Spice Latte, or PSL, as the hipsters may refers to it. Food Babe is a popular food blog that dissected an American Staple. I was surprised, but not surprised all in the same breath. With a society that is driven by taste over nutrition quality, of course Starbucks would want to make sure their drink surpasses anything you could make at home, and with the ingredients I found, it’s definitely NOT something I can duplicate in my kitchen [[I do have a Healthy Breakfast Challenge PSL Smoothie after all of this that is delicious, includes real pumpkin, and jump starts your day]]!!

FB_SBPumpkinSpicePreviewImage_2

What’s In A Pumpkin Spice Latte?

  • Espresso: water, brewed espresso coffee
  • Pumpkin Spice Flavored Sauce: Sugar, Condensed Nonfat Milk, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Annatto (food color), Natural & Artificial Flavors, Caramel Color (Class IV), Salt, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative)
  • Whipped Cream: Whipping Cream, Starbucks Vanilla Syrup (sugar, water, natural flavors, potassium sorbate, citric acid, caramel color)
  • Pumpkin Topping: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cloves, Sulfites

If you get dairy:

  • Starbucks serves Monsanto Milk – these cows are raised on GMO corn, soy, and cottonseeds and treated with antibiotics

Scary Facts:

  • Caramel Color IV is made with ammonia & considered a carcinogen
  • Absolutely no real pumpkin is used in the drink
  • Starbucks Soy Milk contains “Carrageenan” which is a stabilizer linked to intestinal inflammation and cancer
  • A grande PSL contains over 50 grams of sugar
  • The term natural flavors is ambiguous and can contain anything found on earth
  • The pumpkin spice flavor contains condensed nonfat milk, making this drink not vegan friendly even if ordered with soy milk

You can catch all of Food Babe’s blog on her Starbucks PSL discovery here:

I really try to pay attention to the ingredients that I fuel my body with and make smarter choices as much as possible. Obviously, the ingredients in the Starbucks Staple, PSL, are not ideal on a regular basis. Starbucks in general, has become a very very occasional event in my life. As apart of the Healthy Breakfast Challenge, I wanted to develop a yummy, fall-oriented, smoothie that embodied everything wonderful about autumn.

Meet Alexandra!

One of the most rewarding experiences about starting my nutrition plan has been the incredible and powerful people have been introduced to. One of the first things I learned from my mentor was to be attractive. Not attractive in the sense that society thinks, but attractive as in focusing on what vibrations you are bringing to this planet. Everything that you are and represent is what you attract in your life. If you’re finding yourself swimming in negativity and drama, chances are it is the vibration that you bring.

Once I became solely focused on health and becoming an influential woman, is the exact moment that other influential woman started entering my life. The journey has been amazing and there is a world-wide movement that is happening. I wanted to have the opportunity to feature some of my teammates on here because my story is just 1 story – it might not be something that you can relate to, but one of the stories you find on here might be someone that changes the way you think, and motivates you to become apart of the health movement.

First up, I had the incredible honor of interviewing Alexandra. She became apart of our team just a few months ago, but is already making a giant impact. She represents body positivity to fullest, and let’s face it – she radiates life! Here’s the talented, gorgeous, and wonderful, Alexandra!

Alexandra Kulp2

    1. Name: Alexandra Kulp

    2. Nickname: Alli
    3. Three words that best describe you: Passionate, Driven, Curious
    4. Other gigs (what else do you do? career. school, family): I passed the NCLEX-RN a month ago, and am currently in the market for a hospital-based RN position! I currently work as a PSA (fancy term for nursing aide) at one of the large Central Ohio hospitals. I do spend a great deal of time with my family, helping out my parents whenever possible and engaging in mutual support systems with my three older sisters.
    5. I feel the most beautiful when: I’m happy, consciously thankful, and actively helping others. A nice, feel-good outfit and a little red lip always helps, too. ;P
    6. What does “healthy” mean to you? Healthy, to me, is not something that can be determined by simply observing the appearance of an individual. Healthy is the cohesive nature of strengthening your mind, body, and spirit in all aspects of your life. You cannot expect to hold onto toxic feelings, thoughts, or friendships, and still SHINE BRIGHT on the outside. Your health is more than your hours at the gym and what you put in your body, although the importance of those two things are absolutely part of the puzzle! If you are looking to get healthy, take a step back and evaluate all aspects of your life. I have a predominantly holistic view of health. Hold on, because this could be long-winded! I am eternally grateful for the encouragement to defy the ‘norm’ and embrace my individuality and strength that my parents instilled in me as a young girl when my insecurities were exceptionally heightened. I found a passion for the marrying of mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being when I began practicing Tae Kwon Do at 10 years old. Although my active practice has since passed by a few years, I retain much of the mindset in regards to the notion of a healthy community, a balanced mind, and the importance of simply breathing.

    7. Why did you start a nutrition plan? As a college nursing student who picked up a management minor late in the game, I struggled for four years straight (Im the crazy lady who never took a Summer off of classes!) to find the balance between what I thought was healthy and what was convenient. Between 24-36 hours of clinical and 16-18 hours of lecture per week, it was a struggle. Primarily, I lacked the knowledge and experience to put into play what I learned in my sophomore year nutrition class! I lacked the support I needed to be successful. A sorority sister of mine, Katey, introduced me to Herbalife products, glowingly speaking of her life-changing experience, even beyond nutrition. She spoke so highly of the community and support (especially of this one rockstar lady named Jacqulyne) and the wealth of knowledge everyone brought to the table. I was highly intrigued, and took that first step alongside Katey as we both entered the Ohio Body Transformation Challenge.
    8. What was the first thing you noticed after starting your plan? Besides the crazy convenience of having healthy meals at my finger tips, my energy levels increased tremendously! I had to previously rely on my morning (oh, and afternoon) coffee to wake me up enough to be a functional part of society! While I still have the occasional cup of coffee, simply because it is delicious, I no longer depend on it. Feeding my body the right amount of nutrients allowed my mind and body to function at a much more optimal level!
    9. What’s your result (so far…)? Besides the increase in energy, I have also lost 6.2 lbs, 6.6% body fat and gained 8 lbs of lean muscle mass! I am able to fit into my favorite pair of jeans that I had not been able to comfortably wear or wiggle on for quite some time. Beyond the physical, I have gained friends who glow with positivity and encouragement within a community that empowers each individual to compete with only who they were yesterday.
    10. What is the best moment of your life? I would have to say the best moment of my life is not an action, a memory, nor an accomplishment. It revolves around a realization. As women, we are inundated with unrealistic expectations of how we should look, how we should dress… develop our careers… act towards others as not to intimidate… be ashamed of our bodies if they dont look like those in the magazines…. the list could heartbreakingly go on forever.

The best moment of my life was the realization that the only reason I should seek to improve myself was for me and me alone (regardless of if it were for health, confidence, etc). I did not owe my prettiness to anyone. I should never have to apologize to someone else for my imperfections. They make me who I am, and they are evidence of such deep history and a product of two of the most hardworking, caring individuals I know. Our bodies are complex and amazing workhouses, and I strive to improve my body because I RESPECT it, not because I am ashamed of it. I work to improve my mental health, because I am everlasting awe of the strength of the mind. I want to be the very best of me, not someone else. We are all on our own journey, but I hope more ladies come to the realization that a number will not make them happy. You must find it within yourself, as it is there, waiting to SHINE!

    11. The legacy I leave will look like: Empowered individuals who have the ability to recognize their own worth. We are all human, and we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Turn your weaknesses into your strengths, and shine on.

Alexandra Kulp

Healthy Breakfast Challenge

IMG_9981

We all have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…but let’s be real here – How many of us skip breakfast because we are trying to lose weight and don’t want to take in the extra calories?!?! I was totally this girl! I knew how important it was, yet I still struggled. That is, until I committed to living a healthier life to inspire others. And it’s a good thing too! Here’s one of the many things I have read on WebMD. It states “Some people skip breakfast in an effort to lose weight, but that’s not a good idea — it can backfire.

Skipping meals, especially breakfast, can actually make weight control more difficult. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal, or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger.

Several studies suggest that people tend to add more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals than when they eat the same number of calories in smaller, more frequent meals.”

WedMD continues, “Not only does it give you energy to start a new day, but breakfast is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance.

Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (as opposed to the kind containing doughnuts) can help give you:

  • A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals
  • Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom
  • More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity
  • Lower cholesterol levels

Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on the playground, with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination.”

So now we can all agree that there are many benefits to a healthy breakfast, and let’s just clarify, coffee and a pastry do not count as “healthy” – we are talking food with real colors, not dye, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber! But there are still so many people that skip this critical part of their day that jump starts their metabolism and activates their brain power. So I have started

1 Year + 2 states + gratitude + [not-so] Fairy Tales

Every little girl dreams of the day that a handsome prince shows up, sweeps her off her feet, and they fall madly in love. We grow and realize, well fairytales are a bunch of…

CRAP!

Yes, I said it and I mean it too. It’s an unrealistic expectation. Except, it happened to me.  –

Just when I reached the point of my life that I was going to be focused on no one but me and my career. That “I sure don’t need anyone, I’m such an independent woman” thought process. When I was completely convinced [and whole heartedly accepted] that this life was big enough for just me and the Macy-Cat, that’s when Prince Charming introduced himself and changed everything. IMG_5574

This is Jeremy…only about 48 hours after meeting me. ((rewind)) Jeremy is also with Herbalife and we both happened to be at the same, most-epic, totally awesome training event [Extravaganza]. Thanks to his totally awesome brother, we were introduced to each other…If I could have cued the sappy Disney Music, trust me, it would have been playing because I knew at that very moment that this prince charming was about to put my entire “Miss Independent” life anthem on it’s butt.

…Downfall…we lived over 2,000 miles apart from each other.

Thankfully, my mentor taught me that there is no such thing as problems and after months of facetime dates, long conversations, and a few visits to new states – I made the biggest decision of my life. I was going to pack my entire life up and move to Ohio to pursue our dreams of coaching together, and making an impact on the community and my dreams of marrying a prince.  So I managed to fit 27 years of existence into 50lbs in a UHAUL trailer, with the rest into a Honda Civic that also had to fit me, Jeremy and can’t forget…The Macy-Cat.

Photo 2013-09-03 08.03.49 AM

It’s truly crazy how fast time can go. It’s been an entire year now [HAPPY 1 YEAR OHIO ANNIVERSARY TO ME] but yet I feel like my list of accomplishments look more like I arrived yesterday [which was reflected in a very normal, nothing special kind of celebration of daily life]. It’s definitely not how I imagined life would be 365 days later. When I got here, I was going to do so much, change so many lives, advance so much in my career, hit major milestones in my life…and yet, I just feel older.

I know I can’t be the only one out there that has a moment when you sit back and likely say out loud, “shit! what happened?” I hop on social media to distract myself [its like watching cheesy love movies after being dumped, it’s just not a good idea!] and see friends getting engaged that met after Jeremy and I did, friends even getting married, having babies, and achieving so much success in their careers. My entire life I struggled with the notion that I wasn’t and never will be good enough. It’s a easy slope to tumble down, and it hurts like the dickens the entire way to rock bottom. It’s easy to look at things and feel insignificant. To feel inadequate. To look at others and think, if they got ____, what is so wrong with me?

Please tell me that I am not the one and only person that’s experienced this before?

So, I have made up my mind.

If feeling like crap and not good enough is the easy way, then what can happen if I try to deal with everything the hard way.  I found a quote, and it’s been on my mind a ton lately because it’s been a huge struggle of mine. I reads

Comparison is the

thief

of all joy.

And so, I begin my gratitude journal. Something for you all to experience with me, and something I challenge you to the same reflections. Studies have shown [I have no clue which studies…] that people that express gratitude are happier, more fulfilled, and just all around more awesome than those that don’t. Here begins all the incredible daily things in life that I am grateful for.

1) This fluff nugget – the forever by side kitty that thinks she is a dog. This is the official [and absolute coolest] Macy-Cat

IMG_9899

2) Having a man that for some reason, loves the snot out of me [or at least he says] – even when I am strong willed and determined to do things my way and avoid doing the dishes sometimes, he keeps me around.

IMG_9315

3) I don’t know how this woman has done the things she has to repeatedly save my butt and help me out every.single.time. I need it, my mama is incredible and I am so grateful that I had to opportunity to see her last month. I really miss the hot and mostly boring place that I call home. And I miss my family and friends that fill it.

IMG_9850

4) Grateful for the challenges I have faced, the disappointment I have felt, the people that hurt my feelings, and the sting of losing what you thought were friendships. Moving a very fast growing business to a new state was way more challenging than I ever imagined. I went from a well known growing leader to just another person in an instant. Lost a few close people I cherished as friends. But learned that not everyone will like me…and it’s ok. I learned what I did do well. What I can improve. And have time to really focus on building a team of my very best friends that stand for what I do. To have time to grow. To fine-tune my dreams. And be solely responsible for them coming true.

5) My faith grows stronger every day. I know that I was put on this earth to do something that will last longer than me. Even when I get frustrated with my story, I trust that there is a reason for it all. If I think about the teeny tiny things that lead me to moment that I met Jeremy, I wouldn’t go back and change any detail if it meant changing the fate of us meeting. All that icky stuff was completely worth what I have done so far. I was able to take my further when I was baptized this summer.

6) There’s a few incredible, powerful, and loving women that have embraced all of my weirdness, and have decided to be weird with me. This is what friendship truly is – people that love you even thou you are completely bizarre. And for them, my heart is forever grateful. Even if a busy schedule keeps me from chatting as much as I want to, I hope they all know just how deeply I care for them [old & new].

7) Writing has been a passion of mine for several years. I am grateful that I have started this blog – something that represents all of me and hopefully inspires all of you. I hope to represent something fresh. To be a resource. And to start a movement. I am grateful for every last person that has taken the time to read my thoughts, comment, join, follow, share, and just give a darn. Thank you. ❤

Tuesday is a fresh chance to do things just 1% better than the day before and during that day, I will try to eliminate comparisons and replace with gratitude, to smile, and to 1 selfless deed for someone else.

I Feel the Most Beautiful When ___________.

Are you honestly able to answer this question? Many women can’t, or won’t. Instead we look in the mirror and find all our flaws, where we need work, and wish we didn’t have. Body Image is the the difference between what our expectations are and the way we see ourselves. We have seen images our lives that develop a standard of the “ideal” body that we hold ourselves accountable to and many us feel we will never be good enough. You don’t have to feel this way. You, yes YOU, are beautiful! No matter your dress size. No matter a number on a scale. You are gorgeous. You are powerful. You can change anything you can dream of. This was a great video I found, that introduces body positivity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lz6tYh4esY

Take your focus off a size or a number. Focus on your health. Are you feeding your body healthy food? Are you moving your body? Are you treating your body like a devine piece of machinery that it is? Are you setting a good example for the next generation?? YOUR daughter, YOUR niece, YOUR best friend…eyes are on you whether you know it or not. Be bold. Break the mold. Change society and yourself. LOVE YOURSELF AND START A MOVEMENT!

Please comment and share, lets spread positivity and HEALTH!
